Known for its abundance of dry snow and excellent terrain for learning, Myoko Kogen is the perfect place to take your students on a snowsports adventure. With 16 metres of snowfall this season, Myoko Kogen saw double the snowfall of popular resorts in the nearby Hakuba Valley and Nozawa Onsen. Boasting nine different ski resorts with runs for all skill levels, it’s no surprise that students leave feeling mesmerised.
Myoko Kogen is situated in the Northern Japanese Alps and is easily accessible by private coach from Tokyo Narita Airport. Our groups stay at Myoko Akakura Onsen and Kanko Resorts at the base of Akakura ski area, situated in an enchanting village full of learning opportunities, rich in Japanese culture and history, making it the perfect base for school groups.
Amazing accommodation at Akakura Central Hotel
Our groups stay in a beautiful, traditional Japanese ski in/out hotel located in the centre of Myoko Kogen, just 50m from the main street of town. With both Japanese and Western style shared rooms students and staff can relax in comfort. The hotel provides delicious meals and the mix of western and Japanese food encourages students to expand their palate.
Snow lessons delivered by experts
Students experience the best of Myoko’s skiing and snowboarding with resident experts Myoko Snowsports, who also provide high-quality snowsports gear including skis, boards, clothing and mandatory helmets. Just 50 metres away from the hotel, expert staff will kit and clad students for their ensuing snowsports adventure. The snowsports school has an international team of English-speaking instructors, known as some of the best instructors in the world, they have a breadth of experience in building confidence, progressing skills and guiding students through the wealth of terrain on offer at the connected resorts.
On the first day, students are separated into groups based on their skiing/snowboarding ability and continue to participate in lessons each day for the duration of the program. During the lessons, instructors continue to build on students’ skills to ensure maximum growth.
Snow Monkey Park
There’s plenty of exciting things to do around the area other than snowsports, including a visit to the iconic Jigokudani Snow Monkey Park. This unique conservation area is home to approximately 200 wild Japanese Macaque or ‘snow monkeys’ where students can observe the wild monkeys going about their daily lives including bathing in the natural onsens. It is considered to be the only place in the world where you can see snow monkeys bathing in hot springs in the wild.
Cultural experiences
Food is a big part of any tour of Japan and especially at Myoko Kogen where students can explore the delicious street food offerings at the Akakura Market and try Oyaki steam buns, bowls of udon or ramen noodles and Japanese crepes. Other cultural activities include the opportunity to practise Japanese calligraphy, take part in a tea making ceremony, make your own sushi or wear a traditional kimono.
It’s no surprise that students return home from Myoko Kogen with confidence, new skills, an appreciation and knowledge of the Japanese culture, and of course – amazing memories that will last a lifetime!
