The Australian Government has launched the Kids for the Reef School Excursion Rebate Program, a $6 million initiative designed to help more Australian students experience the Great Barrier Reef through curriculum-linked educational travel. Part of the broader Reef Educational Experience Fund (REEF), the program aims to make school excursions more accessible while inspiring students to connect with one of the world’s most significant natural environments.
What is the Kids for the Reef School Excursion Rebate Program?
The rebate program provides financial assistance to eligible Australian schools and registered home educators taking Year 4 to Year 12 students on educational excursions to the Great Barrier Reef.
Rather than offering a flat rebate, funding is based on each school’s location. Schools travelling from regional, remote and very remote areas may be eligible for higher rebate amounts, while additional support is available for schools with lower socio-educational advantage and eligible excursions involving First Nations students.
The program is open until 30 June 2028, or until available funding has been exhausted, giving schools several years to take advantage of this exciting opportunity.

Who is eligible?
The rebate is available to eligible Australian schools planning educational excursions for students in Years 4–12. To receive funding, excursions must meet the program’s eligibility requirements, including visiting approved Great Barrier Reef experiences delivered by registered tourism operators.
Rebate amounts
Rebates are calculated on how far your school is from the departure point of your chosen Reef activity and can range from $20 and $400 per student. Calculate your distance from the Reef here.
